Part of the allure of ultrarunning is how it gets us back to the land and our roots. For nearly 5 years now we have been back in Wyoming in my hometown. Part of the allure for coming home was being able to expose our children to the goodness of farm life without having to own one ourselves. Now I spend my summers running and helping my Dad on his small dairy. I always tell everyone that it is a “win-win” situation because he doesn’t have much money to pay and I don’t want to work much. I have read that most food in America has traveled over 3000 miles before it hits our plates and that the best thing for the environment is to eat locally. Small family farms are disappearing at an alarming rate. At times farming gets a bad rap because of pesticides in the watershed and other environmental damages they may cause. Most often the culprits are the huge commercial farms which are making it hard for the small guys to survive. Support local farms by purchasing their milk and produce, and if you need some cash for race entries, well, your local farm might be the “cash cow” you’ve been looking for.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
